With easy access from Mongla Port (located only 4.8 km away from Mongla Ferry Ghat) the Karamjal Ecotourism Center (KEC) is a beautiful spot located at the edge of the Sundarbans on the bank of the Pashur River under the Chandpai Range of SEFD. Every year thousands of local and international tourists visit this place. The total land area of KEC is around 30 hectares. Karamjal and Nalbunia canals flow through the north and south of the site.
No permits from Forest Department are needed to go to Karamjal, but there is a small entrance fee that is paid at the entrance gate. Overall, it is a perfect place to make a day visit within budget, and to get an orientation of the Sundarbans mangrove forest.
Karamjal’s Captive Breeding Center allows visitors to see deer, crocodiles, monkeys and turtles (Northern River Terrapin). This initiative was taken to conserve crocodile and turtle populations in the wild which is a great learning opportunity for zoologists and conservationists. Sightings of the Bengal Tiger - the keystone species in the SRF - are very rare, but visitors do sometimes see pugmarks and other signs of the big cats. Nearby, Dhangmari canal is recognized as a Dolphin Sanctuary. Dolphins are visible at the junction of the Dhangmari canal and Pashur river. Wildlife such as monkeys and birds are regularly spotted along the center’s elevated trails made of wood and concrete and also from the observation towers built for wildlife and forest canopy viewing. Karamjal is a wonderful spot for bird watchers and researchers as various species of birds are found here including some rare and exclusive ones for example Mangrove Pitta, Firethroat, White-rumped Vulture, etc. Tourists can have a view of a forest canopy from a watch tower here.
